Hey! They didn’t ask us how our business is doing! If they had asked, they’d know we’re doing just fine.
Sheesh. This article continues an odd journalistic trend that I’ve noticed recently, in which reporters make grand assumptions about the dire pitfalls of internet comedy, base them largely on FunnyOrDie, and mysteriously ignore CollegeHumor.
I don’t blame anyone for focusing on FunnyOrDie; it’s a good story, Will Ferrell, etc. But CH has six million unique visitors every month (compared to their 835k), and CHTV averages hundreds of thousands of views per video. We’re making money, our batting average is respectable, and our audience is loyal. I have nothing against those dudes, but when Newsweek uses them as their major example of how even “the most highly regarded sites” are failing, it’s just lazy. I want to be like, “Hey. We have seven times their audience. And we’re friendly people, too. Just the other day we had a barbecue, and it was delightful. Things are a-okay.”
A better article about the current state of online comedy is this one from USA Today, which features my friends Joey & David. It’s also intrigued by FunnyOrDie and only marginally more fair to CH, but at least it acknowledges our existence.
